Many Tottenham fans were no doubt on tender hooks after seeing that midfielder Harry Winks was ruled out of the North London derby with a hip injury on Saturday.

He has no doubt been one of their players of the season and has contributed a large amount to the success of the team this term, but the Arsenal clash was one game that he had to sit on the sidelines for.

In his place came Victor Wanyama, a player who had not started since November – and based on this performance, it is for good reason as well.

His performance was not blemish free in the slightest, and to be honest, it was his inability to effect the game that struck out more than anything – basically, the 27-year-old had not shaken off any of his rustiness.

Winks should have been nervous about Wanyama starting in his place – not the complete opposite. In fact, the star is hardly going to bat an eyelid about his starting XI place after this underwhelming outing from the Kenya international.

What does the future hold for Wanyama after this? Mauricio Pochettino obviously turned to him as a last resort due to Eric Dier being ruled out, so once he returns, his future is looking pretty bleak.

The midfield did not look the same with Wanyama in the thick of it and it was clear to see that the likes of Moussa Sissoko hard to make up for his failings all afternoon.

Either way, Winks should not be too worried about his teammate breathing down his neck for a starting XI spot, as he just bordered on invisible.

Many Spurs fans no doubt understand why Pochettino has left Wanyama out of the team since November after this nervous 1-1 draw, and it will certainly not be a surprise that they call for his axe.
