Tottenham are in the hunt to sign Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare, according to Foot Mercato.

The French news outlet claims that that Spurs have sent scouts to keep close tabs on the 20-year-old, and they have been impressed by his recent performance for France’s Under-20s as they beat Argentina in a friendly this week.

It is understood that Soumare has plenty of suitors with Juventus also scouting him and Valencia plotting a swoop to sign him in the summer transfer window.

Good move for Tottenham?

Spurs need to find themselves one or two new central midfielders in the summer and Soumare could end up being their long-term replacement for Mousa Dembele if he is as good as his hype suggests.

To compared him to France World Cup winner Pogba is an exciting claim for Spurs because they could do with a midfielder of the Man United star’s abilities now that Dembele has gone.

Soumare is young though and is not very experienced.

He has made 15 appearances in all competitions for Lille this season and has not started a single game in Ligue 1.

The France youth international would be a good long-term signing for Spurs, but here are doubts about whether he could hit the ground running.

Likely to happen?

Spurs are going to have to bid early for Soumare in the summer transfer window if they want to beat a long-list of teams interested in him.

The 20-year-old will enter the final year of his deal with Lille once this season ends so there is a good chance he’ll be on the move.

However at the moment, Valencia appear to be the most likely team to sign him up.
