OPINION
Brexit has dominated news headlines in the last two and a half years, but footballers have rarely tweeted about their political stance, perhaps through fear of alienating some of their fans. However that has not stopped Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier from throwing his weight behind a people’s vote in a short and simple message via his personal Twitter account on Thursday morning. It was pretty much expected that the England international would be told to “stick to football” by at least one Spurs supporter, but one has even go so far to say that he is unfollowing the defensive midfielder for his political view. Dier’s tweet could potentially lead to more players publicising their opinion on Brexit, one of the most controversial political issues in a generation. It will be interesting to see how fans and the media reacts when a player shows an opposing opinion to Dier – especially if it’s one of his team-mates.
