Celtic defender Kieran Tierney is to miss Scotland’s next clash against San Marino through injury, according to Sky Sports.

The sports news broadcaster reports on their website that the left-back is suffering from an ongoing groin problem, and will return home as a result – this means that he will miss the Scots’ next European Championship qualifier against the minnows on Sunday.

The Hoops mainstay – who has made 36 appearances this season – was also absent for his country’s opening 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan on Thursday.

OPINION

The fact that Scotland are losing Tierney to injury completely will be a massive loss to boss Alex McLeish. They desperately need to bounce back against San Marino next time, and that will be made harder without the defender in the picture. Some will argue that playing for Celtic against Dundee the other week is what aggravated the injury, and to be honest, that could not be far from the truth. If he had not played, there is the chance that he would be in contention for Scotland for their next important clash. However, they will just have to show that they can cope without him, although that should not be hard against the likes of San Marino. Tierney will be a big loss for them, but at least him returning home to rest means that he has more of a chance of making the Old Firm derby next Sunday.
