BBC Sportscene pundit Steven Thompson has slammed Allan McGregor for the mistake that led to Kilmarnock scoring against Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday.

McGregor, 37, has been one of the best players for the Light Blues this season, but he had a nightmare at the weekend when he was caught in no man’s land before Conor McAleny scored against him in the first-half.

Luckily Alfredo Morelos bagged an equaliser after the break to rescue a point for Rangers, but Thompson was less than impressed by McGregor and the defending the lead up to McAleny’s goal.

“Horrific defending from Rangers, Allan McGregor knows he’s had a bit of a beast there,” said Thompson on Sportscene, as shown via BBC iPlayer [37:10 onwards].

OPINION

McGregor has been super steady for Rangers this season, earning them a lot of points with some fantastic displays in between the sticks. However every now and then, the ex-Hull shot-stopper has had a rush of blood to the head. Usually it is him kicking out at opponents and getting himself into trouble with the compliance officer, however on this occasion he just seemed to forget he was a goalkeeper. He rushed out of his goal, and got ran past so easily by McAleny it was like McGregor had forgotten why he was running out of his goal. Looking back at it now, it was on the verge of comical the way he came nowhere near to stopping the Kilmarnock player. Thankfully those moments have been few and far between and on the whole, the former Scotland international has been one of Steven Gerrard’s best players at Ibrox this season.
