Chris Sutton has blasted goalkeeper Allan McGregor for rushing out of his box in the build up to Conor McAleny scoring for Kilmarnock in their 1-1 draw at Ibrox on Saturday.

McGregor, 37, has been one of the players of the season at Ibrox this season, but the former Scotland international will surely feel disappointed for his role in the Gers going behind against Killie.

Ex-Celtic striker Sutton was quick to criticise the veteran shot-stopper after the goal went in.

“I think it’s a really poor decision by McGregor, who has been brilliant this season in goals for Rangers. He’s in no man’s land, outside of his box. McAleny goes around him, rolls the ball into an empty net,” said Sutton on BT Sport Score [Saturday, 03:30pm].

OPINION

McGregor has been impressive for Rangers for most of this season, but the former Hull goalkeeper has been prone to the occasional rush of blood to the head. Whether he’s kicking out at opponents or rushing into no man’s land, McGregor probably shouldn’t be making these kinds of mistakes for a player of his experience. Rangers’ defence has been poor this season, and has only been made better than it is by McGregor’s confident displays between the sticks. However when he’s making mistakes, what chances do players like Connor Goldson have? It’s definitely an area that Gerrard needs to look at in the summer. Joe Worrall will return to Nottingham Forest while Goldson has been unimpressive since the winter break. McGregor should stay in goals though. All the good things he do outweigh the mistakes and if he gets suspended, Wes Foderingham is a solid back-up if he stays put at Ibrox.
