Chris Sutton has questioned the wisdom of Rangers making a move for Motherwell winger Jake Hastie.

According to Sky Sports News, the Gers are the favourites to sign the 19-year-old on a pre-contractual agreement, but Sutton is unsure as to whether it would be the wisest move.

Speaking on BT Sport’s official Periscope account, he said: “It’ll be interesting to see how that pans out, because he needs to play regular football, and it’s whether he’s going to get regular football at Rangers.

“Candieas will still be there, they’ve signed Jordan Jones – Ryan Kent’s an interesting one.

“The truth is, if he goes to Rangers, I wouldn’t have thought he would have played.”

OPINION

There’s no questioning the impact that Jake Hastie has had on the Premiership since making the move to the Motherwell senior side, but Sutton could be right on this one. The 19-year-old is clearly a precocious talent, but despite his heroics since returning from his loan spell with Alloa Athletic, his career still rests in something of a balance. Things could easily go one of two ways, and while he could kick on and fulfil his potential, the main concern will be that if he joins a side like Rangers, where he is not seen as an automatic starter, he could stagnate without regular first team opportunities. He might be better off seeking a chance elsewhere, but honestly, when a side as huge as Rangers come calling, why wouldn’t you jump at the opportunity? From the club’s point of view, bringing in Hastie makes perfect sense, and if the player backs himself to force his way into the side, then this could be a goer.
