Stan Collymore has suggested that Sheffield United will march on to promotion after their huge 1-0 win against Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

Leeds squandered a number of chances in the first-half before the Blades took advantage of a lapse in concentration by Liam Cooper, leading to Chris Basham scoring the winner.

Chris Wilder’s side are now second in the Championship standings, knocking the Whites down to third, and Collymore believes that momentum is with the Sheffield side going into the final eight games of the season.

“Monster win for Sheffield United. Cliché time again, if that doesn’t give them belief and impetus, little will,” he said, in instant reaction to the game via his personal Twitter account.

Leeds should have won that game. They have plenty of chances in the first-half, and should have gone in at half-time at least two goals ahead. Tyler Roberts hit the woodwork in the second-half and Basham’s goal was completely avoidable if Cooper hadn’t switched off. It is a massive blow for them, especially as the international break starts after this weekend. Leeds have two weeks to stew over that major defeat in the race for promotion, while Sheffield United will be on a high. Marcelo Bielsa will spend that time figuring out what went wrong and should be able to make his side bounce back, but automatic promotion is no longer in their hands and either the Blades or Norwich will have to slip up in the coming weeks. If West Brom win against Brentford, they can move six points behind the Whites as well. They won’t want to, but they need to be wary of the Baggies creeping back up the table.
