Fox Sports commentator Simon Hill has claimed that Aaron Mooy could return to Scotland in the summer if Huddersfield are relegated, and has mooted the possibility of him joining Rangers.

Mooy, 28, is married to a Scottish woman and played for St Mirren between 2010 and 2012 before returning to Australia and eventually being picked up by Manchester City in 2016.

The Australia international was then loaned to Huddersfield, who bought him permanently for a deal worth up to £10million a year later.

As it stands, the Yorkshire club are bottom of the Premier League, and A-League commentator Hill believes that there is a chance Mooy could join Rangers in the summer transfer window.

However Hill has ruled out the possibility of the ex-St Mirren midfielder signing for Celtic.

“Aaron, with the greatest respect to him, is not the most outgoing personality. Maybe he is in the comfort zone in the UK,” Hill said, as quoted on Fox Sports’ Australian website.

“I just wonder whether a return to the Scottish Premier League (could be on the cards) with maybe a Rangers.

“I’m not saying it would be the best thing for his career but maybe to go to one of the big two, probably not Celtic because they’ve got Tommy Rogic but you never know. I just wonder whether that might be a possibility.”

OPINION

If Huddersfield are relegated this season – and it’s looking very likely – then Mooy will surely be on the move because he’s way too good for the Championship. However the chances of him going to Rangers are remote and unlike what Hill says, there is perhaps more of a chance of him joining Celtic than their Glasgow rivals. Celtic have got Rogic yes, but he is injury prone and the Hoops’ midfield has been thread bare at times this season. Rangers on the other hand would struggle to afford Mooy. Statistics website Spotrac has reported that he earns £50,000-a-week at the John Smith’s Stadium, and that would be a stretch for even Celtic to try and match. That’s not to say Rangers are struggling financially, they just don’t have the means to buy Premier League players who are at their prime like Mooy. He will more than likely be picked up by a team that goes up from the Championship this season than join either of the Old Firm rivals.
