Alan Shearer has claimed that Tottenham can beat anybody on their day after drawing Manchester City in the Champions League quarter finals.

The Lilywhites will remain in England for their European campaign with two legs against the Premier League title hopefuls, who are ranked as one of the favourites to seal the title as Europe’s best club.

Insisting that not one of the other seven teams would have wanted to draw Pep Guardiola’s men in the last eight, Shearer made the bullish suggestion that Spurs are good enough to see any opposition side off if they hit top form.

Writing in his column for Coral on their website, he said: “Nobody will have wanted to draw Manchester City. They are the favourites for the competition for a reason and Spurs will feel as though they have got the toughest tie of the round.

“However if you want to go far in the top competitions then you are going to have to beat the best and Spurs on their day can beat anybody.”

Opinion

Shearer is not wrong in his assessment of the quarter final draw – not one club will have wanted to be coming up against City. Yes, Spurs might be able to beat anyone on their day but hitting the heights of Guardiola and his men means reaching a completely different level of quality and Spurs will have to hope that the reigning English champions have two off days in their two legs. There will do doubt be some debate among the north London faithful as to what their side should do having come up against City in the last eight. Do they focus on the Premier League and nailing down a top four position or do they go all out and try to sink City’s dreams of securing their first Champions League title? Doing one could severely impact their chances of success in the other and this balancing act could make or break their season.
