Alan Shearer has slammed Chelsea midfielder Jorginho for never looking forward, calling Chelsea slow and ponderous after their 1-1 draw with Wolves at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Talking on Match of the Day 2 (Sunday, BBC 2, 10.30pm), Shearer said, “Chelsea were too slow and ponderous and instead of moving the ball forwards too often they decided to go sideways or backwards, and not move Wolves around.”

He claimed that Jorginho was at the centre of this for Chelsea and criticised the player for never looking forward.

“Jorginho here, okay look forward, don’t do what you’re going to do here, take a touch and then go back because that will suit Wolves. It was no change in the second half either. Sideways. Backwards.”

OPINION

It’s not just pundits who are pointing this out about Jorginho, who cost Chelsea over £50million from Napoli in the summer. Chelsea fans have criticised him constantly for holding the play up, and passing sideways and backwards. He’s obviously a talented player so then you have to look at the system that Sarri is employing and ask yourself what’s going wrong. For a side with so much attacking talent in, they’re too often impotent on the pitch, and Sunday’s display against Wolves was hugely disappointing. You could argue that they deserved a draw on the balance of play, but fans would want to be beating sides like Wolves comfortably, and their top-four spot is now in serious jeopardy. Arsenal beat United to go into fourth yesterday and that leaves Chelsea in sixth, three points off their north London rivals. Something needs to change fast if Chelsea are going to overhaul the two teams in front of them and we can’t see Sarri changing. That must be hugely frustrating for Chelsea fans.
