Alan Shearer is furious with Lee Mason’s decision to not send Jordan Pickford off in Newcastle United’s 3-2 win against Everton at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Pickford made no attempt to play the ball when he brought Salomon Rondon down in the box, and should really have been shown a straight red card.

Matt Ritchie missed the resulting spot kick, only for Richarlison to go up the other end and score Everton’s second goal just moments later, leaving Shearer to show his anger on social media.

“A terrible decision and not the only one,” said Shearer via his personal Twitter account on Saturday in response to a tweet complaining about Pickford not seeing red.

OPINION

It is not clear what other decisions Shearer thinks that Mason got wrong in Newcastle’s game against Everton, but the ex-England forward is bound to bring it up on Match of the Day on Saturday night, so it will be interesting to hear what he has to say on BBC One. It was a calamitous decision by Mason to not sent off Pickford. The England number one made no attempt to play the ball and Rondon would probably have scored if he didn’t do it. It would be hard to find an easier decision for a referee. What makes it worse is that Ritchie missed it and then Everton scored. It seemed to put the game out of reach for the Magpies, only for a miraculous comeback in the second-half courtesy of a goal by Rondon and a brace by Ayoze Perez. Benitez is bound to be furious with the decision as well, and you could hear at St James’ Park that the fans weren’t happy either.
