Chris Sutton has claimed Alfredo Morelos could be joined through the Rangers exit door by up to four other first-team stars in the summer.

Writing in his weekly Daily Record column, the pundit is expecting major changes at Ibrox after their season all but ended with the catastrophic midweek cup defeat to Aberdeen.

He suggests Morelos and James Tavernier may be sold to fund a spending spree, and loan stars Jermain Defoe, Ryan Kent and Joe Worrall may not extend their spells.

“The end of this season may well see Alfredo Morelos leave and, with Jermain Defoe bench warming in the main, why would he want to stay?.” Sutton said.

“Chuck in the possible loss of loan players Ryan Kent and Joe Worrall and there seems to be plenty of work to do.

“[Dave] King has backed Gerrard so far, of that there is no doubt. But they may have to cash in on saleable assets like Morelos and James Tavernier to go again.”

OPINION

There must be some doubt as to whether Rangers can afford a serious overhaul without offloading their prize assets. Certainly, star striker Morelos is the most valuable, followed by the skipper and right-back Tavernier. Of the others, none would merit a £3million-plus fee other than Kent, the terrific winger who has got better and better as the season’s gone along, but probably progressed to a level that puts him financially out of reach for Rangers in the summer window. Defoe joined on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth but there are recall clauses in the summer and next January, and his lack of game time may lead to a parting of the ways. As for Worrall, he has made it clear he regards himself as a Nottingham Forest player and wants to make it south of the border. Between them, Morelos and Tavernier may rake in £15million, possibly even £20million. The Colombian has been the best player in Scotland this season but he has not delivered in the marquee fixtures. It might need an Old Firm hat-trick in a fortnight for a suitor to offer close to the £20million valuation of the Glasgow giants.
