There were big hopes around Ibrox this season that Steven Gerrard would bring some silverware to Rangers this season. Sadly, that seems to have disappeared now, after a string of disappointing results in the league and defeat to Aberdeen in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

Victory in the Old Firm clash on Sunday probably won’t make any difference to where the Premiership trophy ends up this season, but it’s a hugely important fixture nonetheless.

So much of the optimism at Ibrox came from the last win at Ibrox, with the 1-0 scoreline flattering Celtic. Rangers bossed the game, should have won by more, and it showed a clear glimpse of a future where the Scottish title was a proper two-horse race again.

But, Rangers know how to beat them. They’ve proved that already and need everyone at the top of their game on Sunday. Victory would prove that progression has been made this season and would give renewed hope that silverware will be coming back to Ibrox next season.

Of course, it would also open up a glimmer of hope that Rangers could mount an incredible comeback and snatch the title away from Celtic. We doubt that will happen, but where there’s a chance…
