Former Rangers midfielder Hamed Namouchi has admitted that he has regrets over leaving Ibrox when he did, suggesting that he was angry at his own decision.

The former Tunisian international joined the Gers in 2003, but left the club shortly after Paul Le Guen took the helm at Ibrox in 2006.

In an interview with The Sunday Post, the 35-year-old admitted that he wishes he had stayed in Scotland.

He said: “When I talked to Le Guen, he said I could stay but I would be in competition with a new player he brought in. I said OK, but soon after I got the opportunity to move to Lorient.

“Of course, when Le Guen left so quickly, I had regrets and I was angry I had left Rangers.”

OPINION

It’s always a little bit bittersweet to hear a player talk about leaving a club with such sadness. On the one hand, it shows that he adores the team, and that is usually a reflection on the fans and the support he was shown, but on the other, it must make people wonder as to what might have been had he stayed a little bit longer. Namouchi was a popular and promising player at Ibrox, dn it just shows how fickle the world of football can be. From being a main man under Alex McLeish, the Tunisian found himself out on his ear under Paul Le Guen, and it’s understandable why, at such a young age as well, he chose to move on instead of fighting for his place. Maybe if he had a little more experience under his belt, Namouchi would have stayed and made a bid to reclaim his spot, but for a player born in France, suddenly ousted form the first team for no real reason, you can see why he packed his bags.
