Rangers manager and England icon Steven Gerrard is on the radar of newly installed technical director of the Three Lions to replace Gareth Southgate, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that Les Reed, a new appointment for the English national side, has included the former Anfield star on his shortlist of potential candidates to take over from Southgate when the current manager does leave his post, having impressed north of the border.

Gerrard has only been in senior management for less than a year, having joined the Gers from Liverpool’s academy, where he was a coach, and has his Ibrox side sitting second in Scotland’s top flight.

Opinion

Southgate best not plan on leaving the England job for a while if the Three Lions want Gerrard to take over. Yes, the Liverpool legend is doing an admirable job with the Gers but he has not won a single thing yet and his lack of experience surely means he is not yet ready for the biggest job England has to offer. Rangers was an opportunity for him to cut his teeth at a giant of British football and he will no doubt want to continue to improve as a manager either at Ibrox or another reputable club before taking on the responsibility of England boss. Even Southgate had some meaningful experience under his belt, despite being considered a relative rookie when he took charge, after spells at Middlesbrough and with the England under-21 side. This has got to be a step too far for Gerrard at a fledgling stage of his career and if he were wise he would turn down any advances. Of course, the lure of the England job could be difficult to resist – but he has his whole managerial career ahead of him and the opportunity will surely come around again.
