Davie Provan has praised the appointment of manager Neil Lennon at Celtic, but said that “he’ll have to do as he’s told” if he wants the top job in the long-term.

He hailed the former Hoops boss as “the perfect choice right now” and said that there is no other person who could create a sense of unity at Parkhead better than Lennon will – but said that he will have to do as he is told to land the long term role.

Provan added that Lennon is in no position to make demands about who the club could sign in the next transfer window – and suggested that it is chief executive Peter Lawwell who will be in the driving seat.

“In Lennon, he now has a coach who’s not going to rock the boat. Happy days. Make no mistake, Lenny is the perfect choice right now. Nobody is better qualified to unite the club,” he said in his Scottish Sun column.

“But if he wants the job long-term he’ll have to do as he’s told. He won’t have an ounce of leverage. Put it this way, he’s in no position to demand anything from the next transfer window. Lawwell has taken back the remote control.”

OPINION

Celtic no doubt need to recruit well in the summer, and Neil Lennon would obviously want a say in who the club could possibly sign – after all, he is the one that could be in charge of them. However, the fact that Provan has suggested that he will have to do as he is told if he wants the top job suggests that he is not going to have much say in what the club do. Many would think that achieving the ‘treble treble’ would be enough to secure Lennon the vacancy, but it seems like Provan has suggested otherwise. There are few more qualified to take charge of Celtic than Lennon, and they would be fools to let someone as experienced as him fall through their clutches. Lennon is someone who knows the club inside out after his previous spell there, and he has shown what it takes to win at a club like the Hoops. Who knows how this could pan out if Lennon cannot demand anything from the transfer window?
