Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has returned to training on Friday (15/03) as he looks to step up his recovery from his injury setback, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Scottish international is back among the senior side under Neil Lennon after missing the last four games due to a muscular injury, meaning he is yet to turn out under the new manager following Brendan Rodgers’ exit.

The return of the 25-year-old, who has been a mainstay this season, will come as a significant boost to the Northern Irish boss, who has been missing a number of midfielders in the first couple of weeks in charge due to injury.

Opinion

Lennon has not had the best of luck when it comes to injury problems plaguing his squad during his short spell in charge and so to have someone of McGregor’s quality and experience coming back will do him the world of good. The Scottish star really was one of the best performers for the Hoops in the first half of the season – hence the vast number of games he featured in – after dropping from his wing role into the middle of the park and while there might be some temptation to move him back out wide, the role he played in the centre of the pitch is one which no one else has managed to carry out. That lack of creativity will be something that Lennon is excited about having back at his disposal and so expect McGregor to be handed his chance in the first team sooner rather than later. With a call up to the Scottish squad, he could use the international break to get back up to full match fitness, ready for the run in until the end of the season.
