Popular broadcaster Jim White has delivered his verdict on Leigh Griffiths returning to Celtic training after the striker’s spell away from football.

The Hoops confirmed on their official Twitter account that the Scottish hitman would be heading back to the club’s training ground this week in a bid to rebuild his fitness after his extended absence from the first team.

The Bhoys star was last seen by fans in early December before being granted special leave by the club and White congratulated the 28-year-old, insisting it was great news.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (27/03, 17:48), he said: “Brilliant news. That is great news for Leigh Griffiths, hopefully back to doing what he does best and that is scoring goals.

“What a good time for them to announce it, with the Old Firm game coming up on Sunday. Obviously he’s not going to participate in that but I’m quite sure he’ll be around the place which is great for him. Well done Leigh.”

Opinion

White is saying what many fans, not only at Celtic Park but across all of football, will be thinking. It is never nice to see a footballer forced to have a spell on the sidelines, whether that be through injury or other problems, and so regardless of your allegiances – other than those at Ibrox perhaps – there will be delight to see him back among the Hoops’ squad. You can be sure that Neil Lennon would love to have him available for this weekend’s tie against Rangers – players with that much experience are often the ones who make the biggest difference – and while he will not be out on the pitch at Parkhead, he might well get his chance to put the boot into the Gers later in the campaign. What matters is that he is back playing football and the Hoops faithful will be hoping for a positive impact when he does step back out onto the pitch – to the joyous cheers of the Bhoys in the stands, no doubt.
