Celtic defender Emilo Izaguirre has lifted the lid on his injury problems as he reveals he is back in full training and looking towards a comeback after the international break.

The Honduran international has been out of action since playing against Hibernian back at the start of March, ending an 11 game run of league games where he missed just one.

Having sat out the last five matches for the Bhoys, he has revealed he has stepped up his comeback and is hoping that the international break can give him the game time needed to get back to full fitness.

He told Celtic View, as quoted by the Daily Record: “I played in about 15 games from November to February and was enjoying it with no problems. Unfortunately, I’ve injured my ankle at the start of March and have been missing since.

“But I am back in full training now and I feel I am ready to take the next step. I could have called off from playing for my national team because of the injury, but I never say no to them. And it will be a help for me if I get some game time.”

Opinion

It should not matter one bit whether Izaguirre is back to full fitness or not after the international break – he is highly unlikely to get much, if any, game time under his belt before the end of the season. The only reason he was playing so many games was because of Kieran Tierney’s injury layoff but with the Scottish international back after his own injury woes, the South American’s chances of action seem slim at best. The only thing Izaguirre can hope for is some rotation among the squad as a result of the Scottish Cup, because otherwise he is going to be watching on from the sidelines for the rest of the season. He might have experience of playing under Neil Lennon during his first spell at the club but quite frankly he is a million miles away from the quality that Tierney possesses and would be a huge step down for the Hoops in the starting XI.
