Former England and Rangers star Paul Gascoigne has tipped Steven Gerrard to write his name into the history books at Ibrox by ending the club’s drought of silverware as manager.

The former Liverpool ace has been in charge of the Gers since the summer of 2018 and took the club to the Europa League group stages, while also doing what he could to mount a challenge for the Premiership title.

Despite having crashed out of the domestic cups and languishing behind Celtic at the top of the table, Gerrard has been backed by Gascoigne to lead the club to glory during his spell in the dugout, insisting that the Gers need to seal victory over Celtic this weekend if they want to stop them from sealing another league title.

He told Jim White on Talksport (28/03): “He’s got the fans and what a great job it is for him (Steven Gerrard) good on him and I’m sure he can (win the title).

“The player he was, if he can turn that into the players as well and give them that inspiration then obviously he’s got every chance. Obviously if Celtic do ten-in-a-row it’s going to take what 11 years in a row?

“The games are massive. Rangers need to win don’t they? But the derbies are incredible. I loved every one of them.”

Opinion

Gerrard needs a lot more than just his name if he is going to bring any sort of silverware to Ibrox any time soon – although the club’s decision makers have definitely backed him as he heads towards the end of his first year in charge. He has made a notable difference when it comes to the belief of the Gers faithful and the quality of player he has brought on board, most notably Jermain Defoe on loan from Bournemouth, shows what a draw he is to players. Of course they have got to topple Celtic if they want to taste glory in Scotland and that is a task easier said than done. The Hoops are proven winners with the experience and know how to get trophies on a regular basis. That counts for a lot when chasing down titles and it is something that Rangers cannot buy in the transfer market.
