Stan Collymore defended Celtic after a fan attempted to question how impressive the Hoops’ 1966/67 quadruple win really was.

The outspoken pundit was talking about quadruples in football via his personal Twitter account and this prompted a Celtic supporter to point out that if Manchester City won all four trophies this season; they’d be the second British team to do so.

This prompted another person to claim that Celtic achieved that goal due to playing in a pub league, and Collymore pointed out the 1966/67 Hoops side are widely regarded as one of the greatest ever European teams.

“In 1967 the Scottish League and English top league would have been comparable in quality,” tweeted Collymore.

“Which is why, if you give it a little thought, Celtic and Scottish football produced what most experts would regard as one of the greatest ever European teams. Some pub league, eh?”

OPINION

Collymore wasn’t ready to see a past Celtic achievement under mined in any way and acted quickly to shut the fan down. It’s fair to say the outspoken pundit made his case well and had the facts to support him. You feel the fan who made the pub league claim, made it on the perception of Scottish football today rather than taking into account the Hoops won the quadruple in the 1960s. Yet even if that was the case the supporter’s pub league claim should still be questioned. Far too often do people look down on the quality of Scottish football and while it is questionable whether it’s as competitive as the English Premier League, that doesn’t mean honours won by clubs should be overlooked. At the end of the day Celtic can only win the competitions they’re eligible for and when they lift a trophy, they deserve respect. Hopefully the fan who questioned Celtic’s quadruple has learnt a lesson and won’t be so quick to take a dig at the club in the future.
