Ex-Rangers striker Kevin Kyle sang the praises of Aberdeen centre-back Scott McKenna after being told of the Ibrox club’s plans to sign him this summer.

Speaking on his Open Goal podcast about Steven Gerrard’s transfer plans for the upcoming transfer window, ex-Celtic midfielder Si Ferry, now at Peterhead, predicted two swoops on Pittodrie.

“I think Rangers will try to sign (Scott) McKenna in the summer. And (Graeme) Shinnie I think, I think they will try and get both of them,” he said.

Ex-Light Blues forward Kyle believes McKenna could be an ideal fit for the Glasgow giants.

He told Open Goal: “£6million for him? He’s a good big player and for me when it comes to Scottish football he’s exactly what you need at centre-half.

“I went to watch Sunderland on Saturday and they could do worse than sign someone like McKenna. He is obviously better than that standard. He’s a big centre-half, hard, physical and he can keep up with them.”

OPINION

McKenna isn’t exactly popular with the Rangers fan base after his 2 February tussle with Alfredo Morelos ended with both players being sent off and the Colombian earning yet another suspension. But they will respect the growing authority of the 22-year-old, which was further demonstrated in his impressive display in last Sunday’s 1-1 Scottish Cup draw against the Light Blues. An eight-times Scotland international, McKenna has come on leaps and bounds in the last two seasons and has been strongly linked with a big-money exit from Pittodrie in the last two transfer windows. A move from the Dons is inevitable, and it is a question of whether the strapping centre-back moves to one of the Glasgow giants or south of the border, most likely to an upper English Championship club. £6million is not cheap, but quality centre-backs who know what they’re doing in the SPL do not come cheap, and McKenna could be a shrewd acquisition for Rangers.
