Robbie Savage has blasted Chris Sutton after the ex-Celtic striker rated Steven Gerrard’s debut season at Rangers as being a four out of 10.

Speaking on Saturday Morning Savage on BT Sport 1, Sutton claimed that Gerrard’s lack of trophies at Ibrox means that he cannot be rated higher than four.

Savage took to his personal Twitter account after the show ended, showing a discussion between him and Dean Saunders.

At the start of the clip, Savage said: “Deano, reaction to Chris Sutton giving Steven Gerrard four out of 10. Absolute nonsense.”

Saunders responded: “It’s really, really harsh. How well could he do when he took the job?

“I think he’s put all the interest back in Scottish football. I’ve got to be honest, I lost a bit of interest because Celtic were running away with it.

“As soon as he got the job, he’s put the league back in shape again for me.”

Savage and Saunders then both agreed that they would give Gerrard an eight out of 10 for his debut season as a manager.

OPINION

Sutton was always going to rate Gerrard’s first season lower than it actually is, but he is not too far off. At the end of the day, Gerrard has not won any silverware, and has not come close to winning silverware either. On the face of things, Gerrard has only just improved on what Pedro Caixinha was doing as manager. Gerrard has won a game against Celtic and pushed them a bit harder in the Scottish Premiership but that is more down to the Hoops’ form dropping than Rangers doing really well. Rangers also reached the Europa League group stage, which will surely go down as Gerrard’s best achievement this season. It’s not to say that Gerrard hasn’t shown promise though. It’s still a long-term project at Ibrox and some of the signings that the Gers manager has made, and the results he has overseen has shown that if he is given time, he could win the league.
