Sky Sports pundit Liam Rosenior has said that Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier has not been good this season.

Talking on Sky Sports The Debate podcast, Rosenior was talking about the current England set-up.

Rosenior said that he thought Dier would make the deep midfield position his own, but added that he thought West Ham’s Declan Rice was now a much more superior option.

“Eric Dier was the one who I thought would take up that position, he was in fantastic form for Tottenham,” Rosenior said.  “But his form hasn’t been good this last season.”

Rosenior went on to say that England new boy Rice would be the man for England moving forward.

“I think he [Rice] will be key for England moving forward,” Rosenior said.

OPINION

Dier has had an inconsistent season, and he’s not the only one who’s been under-performing since England’s World Cup campaign in Russia. Kieran Trippier was fantastic last season and has really disappointed for Tottenham this campaign. Trippier even admitted as much, saying he could do a lot better. To be fair, Dier has suffered from a number of injuries this season and hasn’t had a sustained run in the Tottenham side since the start of the season. However, we could see him leaving Spurs in the summer, with Pochettino probably needing to sell some players to start rebuilding his squad ready for a proper tilt at the title in their new stadium next season. And it would be hard to deny that Declan Rice is the future of England in Dier’s position. Rice has been linked with a move to Man City to replace Fernandinho, and there’s not much higher praise than that. Rice is only 20 too and improving all the time.
