Ian Wright expressed his sympathy for Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier as he was sad to see him struggling for form.

The former Arsenal player shared that while he wanted the Gunners to win their clash with Spurs on Saturday, he didn’t enjoy seeing the 28-year-old right-back play so poorly and get so much stick from fans.

Wright urged Tottenham fans to get behind the struggling Trippier as he claimed that the defender was clearly a real top player and one of the best crossers of the ball going.

“To watch the way it’s working out for him at the minute with his loss of form and the fact he is getting so much stick, it’s really sad to see,” said Wright (BBC Radio 5 Live, Monday March 4th 19:46).

“And he again is another player, a real top player, I’d like to see the Spurs fans get behind him, you could see him literally the other day, we are talking about one of the best crossers of the ball, we have seen what he is capable of, we watched him literally going into his shell against Arsenal the other day.

“I was desperate for us to win it but it was really sad to see the amount of stick he was taking and watch him play that poorly, I really hope he gets out of that soon.”

OPINION

It’s so odd to hear Wright express sympathy for a Tottenham player after the North London derby due to his Arsenal connection, but it’s understandable why he has done that. Trippier made an embarrassing blunder in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea recently and didn’t exactly impress when playing against the Gunners in the 1-1 draw with them. These outings saw Spurs fans direct their anger towards Trippier and it clearly wasn’t helping him get his form up to scratch.  Trippier has proven in his time at Tottenham and Burnley that he is one of the best crossers in the Premier League and it says so much that even his crosses against the Gunners were disappointing. While the 28-year-old even when at his best can look a little uncomfortable when defending, he is still useful for Mauricio Pochettino to call upon. If Spurs are going to defy everyone’s expectations and end with a piece of silverware this season, then Trippier is a player they need in top form.
