Nemanja Vidic has revealed he would love to see Toby Alderweireld at Manchester United next season.

The 20-times league winners were strongly linked with the Belgium centre-back last summer, and again in January, after talks over a new deal at Tottenham collapsed.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Alderweireld has a £26million release clause in his contract and Vidic believes that is highly tempting for his former club.

Vidic told Malaysian TV station Stadium Astro (7:15): “Of course, I would like to see him (Alderweireld) there (Man United). But I think the club has to have a priority.

“What I see is, if you want to be in the Champions League next season and challenge for the Premier League, you have to strengthen the midfield. You need that depth in the midfield area.

“In defence they already have five players, so they can rotate, and it seems like they’re doing well.”

OPINION

In terms of summer recruitment, much depends upon the identity of the next permanent Man United manager. Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer is well placed to get the job after transforming the team’s fortunes during his three months in charge, but there has yet to be any confirmation of the club’s plans. United’s defence is certainly better drilled than it was under Jose Mourinho in the first half of the campaign, with Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling forming a far more effective centre-back partnership than anyone thought possible. With Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly also on the books, United seem well served in that position. But Alderweireld would represent an ideal upgrade. He has turned 30 this month, but his powers have showed no signs of waning this season and he has put a personally difficult 2017-18 campaign behind him to once again be one of Spurs’ outstanding players. At £26million, Alderweireld would be a great signing for United.
