Kieran Trippier will miss Tottenham’s Champions League showdown against Borussia Dortmund after being omitted from the squad, it has been confirmed.

Mauricio Pochettino has told the official Spurs website that the wide defender has been left behind in London and will play no part in the last-16, second leg clash in Germany.

Trippier has been a mainstay of the starting XI this season but has been strongly criticised of late following a series of mixed performances.

OPINION

Trippier’s absence is something of a surprise in one sense, as he has started 11 of the last 15 Premier League matches at right-back or right wing-back, and is the senior player in that position. But Pochettino has acted decisively following some wretched performances from Trippier of late, not least against Chelsea last week, when his calamitous own goal led to furious reactions from many Tottenham fans urging the club to sell him this summer. Serge Aurier is likely to get the nod over Kyle Walker-Peters to start on the right side of the defence at Dortmund, and
