Andy Townsend has claimed Tottenham can upset the odds against Manchester City during their triple bout next month.

The pundit and former Republic of Ireland international claimed Spurs can win two of the three matches scheduled between the sides in 11 days as he explained how City will not like coming against the Londoners so many times in such a short space of time.

“If there’s one manager who gets a chance to plot something against City – usually you just play City, dust it under the carpet and move on – Pochettino is revered as one of the very best managers out there,” Townsend told Radio 5 Live on Monday night.

“He’s going to face them three times in 11 days and you know if they win that first game, could that be a possibility for Spurs to find a solution or two to help them got over the line in one of those other games as well.

“It’s not easy for Man City. To play a team, a good Premier League team, three times is not going to be straightforward and I don’t think they’ll win all three of them.”

OPINION

This is an intriguing verdict from Townsend, and a slightly different one to most of the predictions after City and Spurs were paired in the Champions League quarter-finals last Friday. Most claim the Londoners have an all-but impossible task overcoming Pep Guardiola’s quadruple hopefuls over two legs, and claim the draining effects of those two games could also railroad their own hopes of a Premier League top-four finish, with the subsequent 20 April Premier League trip to Etihad Stadium also looming large for Tottenham. It will suit the Londoners that they are underdogs, and that everyone is expecting City to have too much firepower for Pochettino’s side to cope with. Yet, Spurs are a mighty fine side themselves, and have already claimed some huge Champions League scalps this season. Opportunity beckons for Tottenham. They will have to be at the absolute top of their game, but big things can be achieved.
