Daniel Levy’s reputation as a tough negotiator whose desire to pay bottom dollar knows no bounds has long been copperbottomed. But he has taken that to new heights with his reported offer for Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale. According to the reliable Guillem Balague in an analysis of Real for BBC Sport, the Spurs chairman has made a bid to sign Bale on a season-long loan. Fair enough? Well, not quite. Levy’s offered to contribute “a payment of not much per week” towards Bale’s £385,000-a-week Real salary during the year spell back at White Hart Lane. Spurs fans’ reactions are priceless. Some believe it is “hilarious” and “ultra trolling”, even doubting whether Levy would be willing to contribute £5,000-a-week towards Bale’s monster salary. Others are angry, claiming the chairman’s lowballing is “embarrassing” and proof of his unwillingness to pay what it takes to sign top-quality players following consecutive fallow transfer windows.
