Former Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman has cast doubts over the future of Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino after seeing Real Madrid dumped out of the Champions League on Tuesday (5 March).

The Spanish giants and current holders of the competition were beaten comfortably at home by Dutch heavyweights Ajax, ending their run of consecutive titles.

Predicting that Santiago Solari will not survive at the Bernabeu in the long-term and with Spurs favourite Pochettino having been heavily linked to the Real job in the past, Seaman was left worrying about whether he would remain in north London.

He told talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “Tottenham must be getting a bit worried now. You don’t expect any Real Madrid manager who’s gone through what they’ve just gone through in a week to keep their job. I think it all depends on what Tottenham do this season, whether they win a trophy, and what promises they make to Poch.

“He’s gone through a whole season without signing anyone, that’s hard to take, especially as a team where they are pushing for the Premier League title. It depends on what the board want – do they want Tottenham to be really, really having a go for the Premier League? Poch will want to know that answer.

“If he’s not going to get money then he might start looking over his shoulder. That job at Real Madrid is huge now and it needs a lot of money, but there’s one thing for sure, you will get that money at Real Madrid. It’s a no brainer.

Opinion

Of course the former Arsenal man is going to be picking up on the negatives of Tuesday night, completely disregarding the fact that Tottenham have now progressed further than the current holders of the Champions League with their win against Borussia Dortmund. Joking aside, Seaman does make a very valid point over what might go on over the next couple of months. Spurs have got to start preparing for a summer where they spend some money in the transfer window, with Pochettino no doubt wanting to see some ambition shown by the likes of Daniel Levy and the rest of the board. If they cannot meet his demands then why would he remain on board when the Real Madrid job is likely to be available? He could have taken it last summer but did not and so he might not want to risk missing out once and for all a year later.
