Matt Le Tissier slammed referee Kevin Friend for his performance in Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Southampton on Saturday.

The Saints legend claimed that he didn’t just moan about referees when his former side lost and labelled Friend’s display as nothing short of awful.

Le Tissier indirectly suggested that Spurs should feel hard done by as James Ward-Prowse’s game-winning free-kick was taken in the wrong place.

“Just so you don’t think I only moan about refs when we lose, Kevin friends performance at st Mary’s yesterday looked nothing short of awful! Failing to properly apply the laws of the game in big moments and I include allowing jwp fk being taken in wrong place,” tweeted Le Tissier via his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Spurs fans were no doubt fuming at the referee come the final whistle as it did play a notable part in their side suffering a defeat. While Mauricio Pochettino’s side did under-perform on Saturday they were not helped by the official’s decision. Given that Le Tissier was no doubt buzzing that the Saints got a vital and surprise win over Tottenham on Saturday, it’s very telling that he can’t avoid questioning the referee’s display. The pundit may be a little hard in claiming that the referee was awful, but then he did get several big decisions wrong. The most shocking decision actually favoured Spurs however, as it’s astounding how Moussa Sissoko wasn’t sent-off during the match. The Spurs midfielder put his head right up against Nathan Redmond’s head and normally that aggressive gesture would see a player’s game instantly ended. Yet he only got a yellow card for the whole affair, and that was a surprise to see.
