A journalist has claimed Tottenham are “desperate” to sell Vincent Janssen and he has only been brought back into the fold by Mauricio Pochettino as a “token gesture”.

Writing in a transfer report for Football London, correspondent Alasdair Gold explained there is no way back for the Holland international into the Londoners’ first team.

Gold explained that Janssen will be sold in the forthcoming transfer window and he is only in the first team set-up because the club “couldn’t sell him”, adding “they won’t let that happen again this summer”.

OPINION

Janssen’s failure to end his wretched three-year spell at Spurs in the January window appeared to have led to a U-turn from Pochettino, who had previously ruled out the possibility of the Dutchman ever getting back in his first team. But it appears to have changed little in reality for the 24-year-old Dutchman even though he joined the senior squad at their winter training camp in Barcelona last week. With Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Fernando Llorente ahead of him in the forward pecking order, Janssen’s chances of playing for Spurs again were remote and the fact he couldn’t get a look-in during an injury crisis says it all. The Spurs hierarchy will just have to accept they are not going to get anywhere close to the £18million they spent on prising Janssen from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2016, cash they may as well have chucked on a bonfire and set fire to it.
