Adrian Durham has suggested that Tottenham’s lack of transfer activity means that they are wasting a space in the Champions League.

Spurs drew Manchester City in Friday’s quarter final draw, but talkSPORT host Durham has questioned whether they have any real ambition of winning the competition.

Speaking on his show, he said: “How can Spurs be contenders when you don’t sign players?

“What is the point of Spurs wasting a space in the Champions League when they’re not even trying to win the thing?

“If Spurs don’t make any signings for two windows in a row and they’re involved in the Champions League, surely that tells you they’re not really interested in winning it? If they do win it, it will be a pure fluke.”

OPINION

There is such an unhealthy fixation on spending big in modern football, and in all honesty, suggesting that Spurs don’t deserve a spot in the competition because they haven’t invested money over the past two windows is simply ludicrous. What about Ajax, as an example? The Dutch giants are predominantly built on a foundation of youth and conservative spending, and they humiliated Real Madrid in the last round. Do they not deserve a place in the last eight? It’s a shortsighted and ignorant view of elite level football that perpetuates a narrative that money is king, and the last thing it needs is fuel pouring on the fire. Spurs probably could have done with bringing some bodies in over the past year or so, and you would be massively concerned if they didn’t buy anybody this summer, but it has to be recognised just how well Mauricio Pochettino has done to improve the players at his disposal.
