Eric Dier has been ruled out of the north London derby against Arsenal as he rebuilds fitness after illness.

It could get worse for Tottenham too, with both Jan Vertonghen and Harry Winks facing late fitness tests on hip injuries.

Dele Alli is also still out as he continues his rehab from injury.

The Tottenham fitness update was reported by journalist Jonathan Veal ahead of the derby clash against Arsenal on Saturday.

OPINION

The loss of Eric Dier will be a blow but Spurs have had to do without their powerhouse for a number of weeks now. The other two names are a bigger worry. Harry Winks has been a revelation in midfield this season and Jan Vertonghen – or Super Jan as he’s known by Spurs fans – is a rock. If he’s not available it could force Pochettino to play with a back four, with Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderewireld at the heart of defence. It’s such a massive game for Tottenham too. They’ve lost two on the spin now and a third would leave Arsenal just one point behind them. That would have been unthinkable just a few weeks back when Tottenham were still on course for an unlikely tilt at the title. You have to wonder whether Harry Kane’s status at the club actually works against them at times like this. If he’s nearly fit he plays, and maybe it came too soon this time. They’ve lost both games since he’s been back after winning every single one while he was injured.
