Tottenham are set to tie Fernando Llorente to a new contract and then sell him this summer, according to Football London.

The Reach site claim Spurs will take up the option to extend the contract of the Spanish striker but that does not mean he will stay despite proving his worth in recent months.

Football London report Tottenham use the Llorente contract extension to enhance his market value and they are likely to “accept any bids that come in for him” in the forthcoming window.

OPINION

Given that Llorente turned 34 at the end of last month, it is high time Spurs recruited a younger and more mobile forward to deputise for Harry Kane. The former Spain international has been impressive during his run-outs in recent months, and a haul of seven goals from 24 appearances this season, as well as four assists, is proof that he has made the most of his limited game time. Tottenham fans appreciate Llorente’s presence and hold-up play, not to mention eye for goal, but his lack of pace is a real issue, and his value only comes in late cameos as a battering ram who can win headers and second balls in the box. Spurs are better off bringing in a younger forward in the summer who can also get in behind defenders, although anyone watching Aleksandar Mitrovic, a reported top target for Spurs, against Liverpool on Sunday is unlikely to have been won over by what he has to offer.
