Toby Alderweireld’s future has been a major talking point at Tottenham ever since contract talks collapsed in January of last year. The smart money has been on a departure ever since that point, although the defender stayed put last summer and then again in the winter window. The prospect of the Belgian remaining beyond the forthcoming summer window is remote, however, and the majority of the Tottenham fanbase accept the release clause of £26million in his contract has virtually ended their hopes of keeping him. The player himself has offered an update that can be interpreted a few days. Speaking ahead of his country’s European qualifiers against Russia and Cyprus, Alderweireld told Sky Sports News: “There’s a lot to play for this season. And in the end I have a year contract left at Spurs, so I don’t look further than this season. Other things I don’t know. I am very happy at Spurs, so we will see what the future brings.” Tottenham supporters have long given up hope of the brilliant centre-back remaining at the club and are convinced he is “gone 100 per cent” after his latest comments.

He has a very good PR machine, but we will see him go to a club that are willing to pay his wages in the summer.
