Rob Lee revealed that he thought Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley seem to want to upset Magpies supporters.

The former Newcastle player revealed that when he met the businessman many years ago he seemed okay but pointed out that every time the club took a step forward they ended up taking two massive giant steps back.

Lee claimed that Ashley had no intention of selling the club in his opinion and that the owner would likely be at St James Park way beyond the end of this season.

“I met him once with Alan Shearer many many years ago and he was okay, he just seems to take one step forward and two massive giant steps back,” said Lee on talkSPORT (Tuesday March 19th, 12:24)

“He seems to want to upset the Geordies, you think he’s doing alright then he comes out with a statement at the end of the season a few years ago, we’re going to invest money, we’re going do this and that, every money we generate, but he never does it.

“I just think, you said a little while ago he’ll be there until the end of the season but he’ll be there much longer than that.

“He won’t sell, I don’t think he wants to sell.”

OPINION

As soon as Lee shared that he thought Ashley wouldn’t sell there probably was a collective groan around Newcastle. This isn’t because Lee is in the know but due to the fact the former Magpies player is saying what every supporter fears. There has been talk of Ashley selling Newcastle United for ages now but the club doesn’t seem any closer to changing hands. For every promising takeover report that emerges, another three are revealed that shoot down any hope supporters have to cling to. While Ashley did open the chequebook in January to spend the cash on signing Miguel Almiron, he still isn’t the right man to guide the club forward. The businessman money is never going to invest the money needed to have the Magpies challenging consistently in the top-half of the table because if that’s what he wanted to do, he would have done it by now. While Lee reveals he thinks the chances of the Magpies being sold anytime soon are slim, fans will still just cling to the hope that isn’t the case.
