Ian Wright has delivered his verdict on the shock news of the shattering injury blow to Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff.

It was reported that he is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering knee ligament damage.

BBC pundit Ian Wright responded to the news on his personal Twitter account saying, “That’s terrible to read. No doubt he’ll be back stronger. Gutted for him.”

OPINION

This is terrible news, both for the player and for the club. The young midfielder has only just broken through into the Newcastle team and now it looks like he will miss the rest of the season. That’s a blow for Benitez and his bid to secure Premier League survival too – Longstaff has been hugely impressive since starting the last eight consecutive games for Newcastle in the Premier League. He limped out of the 2-0 defeat to West ham on Saturday and it looks like he won’t be back for Newcastle until the Premier League kicks off again next season. Longstaff scored his first goal for the club in February and he was expected to be called up for the England Under-21s later this month. He played a big part in the impressive recent wins against Cardiff, Manchester City, Huddersfield and Burnley, but Benitez will have to do without him as he prepares to play Everton this weekend.
