Chris Sutton has admitted that he is baffled by reports suggesting that Mike Ashley has taken Newcastle United off the market.

According to The Times, Ashley is no longer looking to sell the Magpies after a prolonged period during which no realistic offer has materialised.

Speaking on Radio 5 Live’s 606 (Sunday March 3, 6:15pm), he said: “It has me scratching my head. They’ve brought a player in and he’s taken them off the market.

“Is that a good thing, is it a bad thing? I don’t know.

“Make your mind up. It’s baffling.”

OPINION

This is just about the last piece of news that Newcastle fans will have wanted to hear. After several months of hoping that Ashley might finally be on his way out of the club, this will come as an absolute hammer blow. The only thing that might come as a consolation is the fact that Ashley has recently broken the club’s transfer record to bring in a player of Miguel Almiron’s calibre.Whether that’s a statement of intent, or whether it’s a move that has been forced by the relatively dire situation facing the club prior to their recent upturn in form remains to be seen, but if he follows up this spending with another positive window in the summer, then maybe the prospect of Ashley staying, even in spite of everything that he has put the club through, might not be the worst thing in the world. Only time will tell, but for now, Toon fans will be gutted.
