Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to deliver his verdict on the Magpies’ late equaliser against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

The Toon Army had to rely on a stunning Matt Ritchie volley to salvage a point in a 2-2 draw against the Cherries, after having taken the lead through a sublime Salomon Rondon free kick.

Writing on his personal account after the Scottish international’s heroics, all-time top scorer Shearer said: “Strriiiiiiikkke”.

OPINION

When the dust settles on this one, Newcastle will look back on very hard-fought and very valuable point against a side that they will feel are of roughly a similar quality to themselves. The Magpies arguably started the brighter, and Rondon’s goal was good enough to justify the lead in any match, but Rafa Benitez will be a little concerned about how easily Bournemouth came back into the match, and how vulnerable his side looked after conceding an equaliser. They had to rely on a moment of magic from Ritchie in the end, and in fairness to the full-back, it was some strike. No wonder Shearer was so impressed by it – the way that the Scottish international watched the ball all the way on his left peg and then thundered home the sweetest of strikes would have made the former Toon captain vert proud himself. Maybe not ideal for Newcastle, but things could have been a lot worse.
