Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has only suffered a slight ligament injury and could be back in training next month, according to reliable journalist Lee Ryder.

The Chronicle’s chief Newcastle reporter claims on his own personal Twitter account that despite the devastating blow, confirmed by the club, that the homegrown talent is likely be out for the rest of the season, his injury is not too serious and that it is merely precautionary, rather than enforced, that he spends the next couple of months on the sidelines.

The news is positive for a player who has stolen the hearts of the St James’ Park faithful, establishing himself as a mainstay in the side after being promoted from the youth system.

Opinion

Excellent news for the youngster, who would have no doubt been fearing the worst when the words “ligament damage” arose from his medical assessment. It really can be the sort of injury which keeps you out of action for months and months but it sounds as though Longstaff could be back on the training pitch a lot sooner than he might have expected. Fans should not get too excited – they are still unlikely to see him playing for them any time soon – but it should at least allay fears that he has suffered anything serious that could come back to haunt him later down the line. The best thing for him is to rest up, ensure he recovers fully and is ready to battle for a first team spot once again next season. This is a sad end to what has been a great breakthrough season for the youngster but all he has done in strengthen his case for regular football in the future.
