Newcastle United rising star Sean Longstaff will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, Alan Brazil revealed on Thursday morning.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on Thursday morning at 8.20am, the broadcaster claimed the midfielder, 21, is set to be sidelined until July.

“We’re hearing that Longstaff will be out for four months with a posterior ligament knee injury,” Brazil reported on the live show.

His punditry sidekick Dean Saunders lamented, “that’s terrible news” as he then explained the damage the young north-east star will have suffered.

OPINION

This is shattering news for Longstaff and Newcastle after his emergence over the last two months as a first-team star at the club. The 21-year-old has been integral to the revival that has saved the club’s season, through a run of four consecutive home league wins, after grabbing his chance in the absences of Jonjo Shelvey, Mohamed Diame and Ki. His class and composure in the middle of the pitch has provided a new dimension for Newcastle and been of added delight for fans as he is a home-grown player who has been on the club’s books since the age of seven. If there is one silver lining in what is a pretty dark cloud for the north-east giants, it is that the summer break will eat up nearly two months of Longstaff’s recovery period and it appears he will be ready to hit the ground running in July, when the club will be due to report back for pre-season training.
