Gary Neville was in awe of Virgil van Dijk during Liverpool’s Premier League draw against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Manchester United legend was on live commentary duty for Sky Sports during the goalless clash and could not help but be blown away by the performance of the centre-back.

“What a player he is, by the way…oh my goodness,” said Neville on the broadcaster’s main event channel after Van Dijk made an expert interception at the 82-minute stage of Sunday’s Merseyside derby.

OPINION

Van Dijk is one Liverpool player who does not look slightly fussed by the pressure of the title challenge, or the toughest assignments the Premier League has to offer. The Holland international has delivered plenty of masterful displays in a season which could end with him winning the division’s player of the year award, but none has been better than his magnificent performance at Goodison. No wonder Neville was drooling. Van Dijk is in such command of his own game, opponents and the occasions that he looks like a man playing against boys. It’s difficult to think of a modern era centre-back who has looked so much better than everyone else in the same way. The game came easy to Rio Ferdinand at times, but he made the odd error, too. Van Dijk’s judgement is flawless, every area of his game is a nine or ten out of ten. The scary thing is that there seems to be plenty more to come for the giant Dutchman. There is actual room for improvement.
