Liverpool fans will be buzzing at the latest update from Jurgen Klopp on Joe Gomez.

The defender looked one of the outstanding players in his position of any age before breaking down in the win against Burnley at Turf Moor on 5 December.

As quoted by the Echo, Klopp revealed that Gomez is edging closer to his comeback after undergoing surgery at the start of February.

“Very positive. Joe is not even in the everyday updates (on players who are out), so that is all positive,” Klopp explained.

“We all expect him to be back after the international break – in full training, and then we will see how long it takes,” he said.

Liverpool have coped really well without Gomez and completely put to bed concerns about the strength of the defensive back-up in the squad.

First, Dejan Lovren and, then, even more impressively, Joel Matip have stepped up to deliver a series of impressive displays alongside player-of-the-year contender Virgil van Dijk.

Yet, neither the Croatia international or giant Cameroonian can provide Gomez’s composure, pace, mobility, awareness of danger and timing.

The 21-year-old made an excellent impression last season when he rotated in the right-back position with fellow lavishly-gifted Englishman Trent Alexander-Arnold, but he’s even more effective in central defence.

It may be difficult initially for Gomez to get back in the side, as Matip has looked increasingly sure of himself over the last two months and was hailed last week as “outstanding” by Klopp.

But the England international’s versatility and adaptability provides an excellent option also at right-back. It will be great for Liverpool to welcome him back.
