OPINION
Liverpool produced a masterful Champions League away performance to eliminate the mighty Bayern Munich and secure a passage to the quarter-finals of the competition for a second consecutive season. No-one watching could say it was undeserved, either. The Merseysiders were in total control, and never looked like losing, even when the Joel Matip diverted a Serge Gnabry cross into his own net from one of the few Bayern attacks of note. Controlling a match at the Allianz Arena required midfield dominance, and Georginio Wijnaldum was the only one of the visitors’ three starting midfielders to play the entire 90 minutes. In his unfussy, team-first way, the Dutchman linked all points of the team and helped his side maintain control. Yet, many Liverpool fans were very critical on social media. Wijnaldum is not a player who lights up matches and is hit-and-miss around the opposition penalty box. But those slaughtering his performance do not appreciate a footballer far better than they give him credit for.

Get rid of Milner or Gini now or we will lose this

I don't care what gini has done this season. His current run of poor form is so worrying. Worst player on the pitch today. #LFC

Liverpool just don’t have any creativity in this midfield. Gini has been absent again and Milner is terrible. Time for Shaq and Keita #BAYLIV

Zero creativity, both Gini & Milner are afraid of there life to get on the ball and even when they aren't on the ball they make no supporting runs to support Fabinho therefore he's being to forced to try play too direct…. https://t.co/w1AXSGJ6QL
