OPINION

On a day when Scotland slumped to one of their most humiliating ever defeats at the hands of Kazakhstan, national captain Andy Robertson was laid up and back home. The Liverpool left-back did take to Twitter with a four-word pre-match message of “Come on the boys” as he convalesced from dental surgery that ruled him out of the Euro 2020 qualifier.

It proved to me a tweet that did not age well, as Scotland were soon 2-0 down against the 117th-ranked side in the world, before eventually slumping to a 3-0 loss at the Astana Arena. The Tartan Army were unhappy that Robertson had used the match as an opportunity to undergo dental surgery ahead of the Premier League and Champions League run-in. A few claimed the defender had “let us down” and told him to “stay at home and not bother” about returning for Sunday’s clash against San Marino. That won’t happen. Scotland badly need their skipper fit and firing for Sunday’s match, which they must surely win for manager Alex McLeish to keep his job.
