Scott McTominay was bizarrely omitted from the Scotland XI that were reduced to a laughing stock as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier today (Thursday). The Manchester United midfielder did, however, make it on to the pitch against the minnows on what the most embarrassing days in the history of Scottish football. He replaced John McGinn after 70 minutes, and showed more in his 20-minute run-out than most of the starters demonstrated in the entire match. Scotland and United fans were staggered that the giant central midfielder was left out in favour of McGinn, Callum McGregor and Stuart Armstrong, with many of them “baffled” by a “ridiculous” decision. No member of the Tartan Army will forget the 3-0 loss in the Astana Arena, but at least McTominay enhanced his reputation with a performance that fans claim means he must start Sunday’s fixture against San Marino.
