OPINION

When is it going to happen for Ross Barkley? The Chelsea midfielder has always promised to become a real force for both club and country, but has never really hit the heights that he might justifiably have been expected to. Against Dynamo Kiev he was disappointing again, looking unimaginative a little off colour during his hours long outing. It’s not that he did anything wrong, necessarily, but nor did he do much right, and that’s the issue. You want a player like Barkley to take a game by the scruff of the neck and dictate it. You want him to pick up the ball from deep and drive at defenders, terrifying them with a dizzying forthrightness and raw power. What you don’t want is for him to passively coast around the middle of the park, halfheartedly dangling his leg into tackles once in a while and predominantly passing backwards, or sideways at best. During his time in London, he has offered glimpses of his undeniable talent, but far too often he has been a passenger. Injuries haven’t always been kind to him, but he’s approaching a point in his career where it is sink or swim. Hopefully he doesn’t disappear beneath the surface.
