Spanish champions Barcelona are tussling with fierce rivals Real Madrid for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claims that both El Clasico participants are keen on the mercurial Denmark international, but that Eriksen only has eyes for Zinedine Zidane’s team.

With the 26-year-old having only a year left on his current Spurs deal come the end of the season, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are resigned to the fact that they will have to sell him.

Chairman Daniel Levy will demand a world record fee of £200million for the former Ajax man, though, as he looks to squeeze every penny out of Eriksen’s sale.

Good move for Tottenham?

If it’s true that Eriksen wants to leave and that the club are resigned to losing him this summer then this is about as good a scenario as the supporters could hope for.

A price of £200million is squad-changing money, giving Pochettino the chance to bring in four or five top quality players to supplement the immense talent already present in North London.

The Argentine has never had that kind of money to play with at Tottenham and it could be just thing to persuade him to stay at the club, even if it’s unfortunate that Eriksen’s sale is what would necessitate it.

Still, if Spurs view the Dane’s departure as inevitable, which it certainly looks as if it is, then £200million is a wonderful return if they can actually secure it.

Likely to happen?

This is the issue for Tottenham.

Barca and Madrid may well be keen on the midfielder, but would either of them really be prepared to part with that kind of cash to bring him in? Probably not.

That is a humongous sum of money and is simply too much for anyone not in the Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi category of excellence.
